Accepting Nominations for 2010-2011 Officers

STD/LIT/EC are accepting names for officers for next year. While Thursday's meeting was a bust in weeding out potential names (as only 3 people were able to make the short-notice meeting), we will be scheduling another meeting in a couple of weeks in order to hold elections for the offices of:

President
Vice-President
Secretary
Treasurer

If anyone would like to run for an additional office (would like to propose the creation of a new office in which to serve), please feel free to let us know.

Please note, we need to push for recruitment for these clubs because our numbers are slowly dwindling. I know that we aren't as active as some other clubs, but it has been difficult to wrangle up a trip or activity when so few members or possible members remain active. Please show your support so you don't have to see these groups, the only ones on campus to provide refuge for us artists known as "English majors" to grow, thrive, and socialize.

That being said, the next few weeks will see a spur of activity if all goes as planned. I will be talking to Dr. Wilson and my fellow officers about a few activities that will spread the word as well as the completion of our community service project. Keep your eyes peeled for the letters STD/LIT/EC on anything!

STD/LIT/EC Meeting Thursday

Dr. Wilson and I have scheduled a meeting for STD/LIT/EC on April 8th during break (12:20-1:20 approx.) in the 2nd floor Conference Room of Hill Hall. We'll be doing a student potluck, so everyone bring something yummy to share with your fellow classmates and professors too! Spread the word and I'll try to get flyers up within the next day or two!

Also, anyone from the honoraries graduating in May needs to let Dr. Wilson or myself know ASAP so that we can order the honor cords for you to wear at graduation. And if you're thinking you'd like more STD swag, check the www.english.org site and shop around. Maybe you'd like an STD tote or a sticker for your car's window! These orders have to go in with the order from Dr. Wilson, as they cannot be ordered by students separately. Let us know ASAP and get the money to DW before the order goes in.

As a reminder: the deadline to submit essays for the essay contest is TOMORROW, April 6th at 3:30pm. Drop off your essays to Hill Hall before the deadline and you have a chance to win $150!

Also, remember that the English Majors' Luncheon is just around the corner! The luncheon will be held on April 20th in the Davis gallery (I think!).

Finally, I'm not quite sure what's up with the English pages, but I'll be checking with Dr. Lidaka to see when they'll be back online. (It may have something to do with that nasty virus that took over the school!)

Meeting Wrap-Up

Just a little wrap-up of things discussed in our meeting this afternoon. We had only 9 in attendance. For those who came -- Thank you! For those who didn't -- Hope to see you next month!

- STD Convention
The annual Sigma Tau Convention is March 17-20 in St. Louis, Missouri. For those interested, the deadline for early registration is February 21st. The cost is $70, which does not include transportation or lodging. We had a few members who were interested, and we can talk to the powers that be to see if there is any financial support available for those wishing to attend. The registration link is: www.englishconvention.org. If you don't register by the 21st, your cost will go up to $85. Unfortunately I will be unable to attend, as my family will be headed out of town on the 20th. The theme for this year's convention is "Storytellers." Please reply or talk to Dr. Wilson if you are interested in going this year. I hear it's great fun!

- STD Internship
There is an STD sponsored PAID summer internship with Penguin Group (USA) in New York, NY. The deadline to apply is February 28th. The recipient will work 28 hours per week and will be paid $7.25/hour. In addition, STD will provide an additional $1,500 stipend to assist with travel and housing expenses. This would be a great opportunity for both the recipient and our school. Go to www.english.org/sigmatd/awards/internships/penguin.shtml for more information and to apply.

- WV Writers Contest and Convention
The WV Writers Inc. is hosting a contest for all ages. Winners will receive a cash prize and publication. For more information go to http://www.wvwriters.org. The deadline to apply is March 15th. Late submissions will be taken, but it will cost you a little more for your submission.
In addition, the same group is sponsoring a WV Writers Covention June 11-13 at Cedar Lakes in Ripley. There are two professors from WVSU who are going to be presenters this year: Daniel Boyd, a filmmaker, screenwriter, and film professor here at State, and Denise Giardina, author of several books, and my old Fiction Workshop instructor! Other presenters include: Lee Maynard, Brad Barkley, Christine Witthohn, Peter Lynch, Dr. Michael Kane, Cheryl Ware, Belinda Anderson, Jimmie Carl Harris, Rhonda White, Rob Merritt, William Bitner, Dana Wildsmith, Sandy Tritt, and Pam Hanson. Get more info at www.WVWriters.org.

- FerrMar Productions Contest
WV Division of Culture and History has posted information regarding a Photo, Poetry, Illustrations, and Short Story Contest by Ferr-Mar Productions. Click on the news link at www.wvculture.org for more information. I don't see a deadline for submissions (the cost is $5 and could result in publication). Check out the site for more info.

- "Inspiration Vacation"
Last semester, several STD/EC/LIT students went to Moundsville State Prison to experience the "Dungeon of Horrors." There has been some interest from professors and students alike in returning for one of the ghost tours or night tours at the same location. We've discussed making a possible weekend trip this semester to go to the Prison, as well as the "Palace of Gold" and the Grave Creek Mound and Archaeological Complex (info available on wvculture.org website). To see more info on the Palace of Gold go to www.palaceofgold.com and check out the amazing pictures of the site. All of these places are relatively close to each other. If there is enough interest, we could arrange a weekend trip up there and experience what the area has to offer. There may even be some cool bookstores to check out (I have to admit, I look for these on every trip I go on!). Let me know ASAP if you might be interested and we'll discuss dates/times/etc.

- Community Service Projects
We discussed several options for a community service project for this semester. Edna proposed talking with several high schools in the state about "sponsoring" a student, or having them shadow us for a day during classes, the cafeteria, etc. We also discussed possible book drives and read-aloud projects with the Child Development Center, or speaking with our neighbors in Fairmont who are part of the National English Honor Society that is sponsored by STD. If you have other possible service projects, let us know!

Finally, for anyone interested, WVSU Day at the Legislature is on February 23rd. I'll be unavailable that day, but if anyone wants to go down to the Capitol and pass out STD/EC/LIT literature or experience any of the activities down there on behalf of our clubs, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the guy who leads the Student Organizations Committee.

One last thing. The deadline for the Essay contest this semester will likely be on April 6th and the English Majors Luncheon will be held on April 20th. (Thanks for the info from Dr. Alderman)

That's all! If you have any questions, email me at ehupp@wvstateu.edu!

RIP J.D. Salinger

From The New York Times:

J.D. Salinger, Author of 'The Catcher in the Rye,' Is Dead at 91

J. D. Salinger, who was thought at one time to be the most important American writer to emerge since World War II but who then turned his back on success and adulation, has died in Cornish, N.H., where he lived in seclusion for more than 50 years, his son told The Associated Press. He was 91.

Mr. Salinger's literary reputation rests on a slender but enormously influential body of published work: the novel "The Catcher in the Rye," the collection "Nine Stories" and two compilations, each with two long stories about the fictional Glass family: "Franny and Zooey" and "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction."

The date of our meeting is Tuesday, February 16th beginning around 12:25 p.m. Come one, come all! Announce to your English major/minor friends. Tell your Undecided friends who are leaning (or might lean) towards English. Who knows, there may be a reappearance of the famous Esther Cupcakes....

I'll post more details later including agenda items and other information as it becomes available. I'll also be making up some flyers so anyone willing to help post them around campus, let me know!!

English Club

The English Club is primarily a social organization for members to discuss and spread enjoyment of literature, film and other pertinent subjects both within the group and within the WVSU community. The club provides a great way to meet colleagues in a non-classroom setting. Meetings enable members to interrelate with their professors at a high level of mutual respect which carries over to an excellent resume builder. The English Club has open membership for ALL State students, not just English majors. For more information and to join up, you can always get in touch with Prof. D. Wilson.
